Mobile payment in Algeria: from transfer alert to daily habit
Cards, apps, QR codes: mobile payment is becoming part of daily life in Algeria. Where things stand, and what to follow at AMS 2027 in Algiers.

“Transfer received.” “Payment accepted.” Both notifications appear in the Algeria Mobile Summit campaign, and not by chance. Mobile payment is one of the most concrete changes the smartphone brings to Algerians. It affects the employee paying bills, the shopkeeper taking payment, the student topping up a plan. Here is an overview ahead of the show, 27–30 January 2027 at SAFEX.
From a cash economy to a connected pocket
For a long time, cash dominated everyday transactions in Algeria. Things are moving. CIB interbank cards issued by banks and Algérie Poste's Edahabia card have made electronic payment familiar to millions of cardholders, within an interbank network run by GIE Monétique.
The smartphone takes this further. Banking apps and Algérie Poste's BaridiMob app let people check their accounts, make transfers and pay from their phones. QR code payments, which only require a smartphone or a printed code at the till, open the door to small shops.
What mobile payment already changes
- Paying bills for electricity, water or phone without queuing;
- Topping up a mobile or internet plan in seconds;
- Sending money to family, from one account to another;
- Buying online and paying straight away, instead of paying on delivery;
- Taking payments, for a shopkeeper or craftsperson, without costly hardware.
Each new habit leads to another. Once a customer has paid a bill from their phone, paying for a ride or a subscription the same way comes naturally.
Obstacles to clear
Trust first: many users still hesitate to hand their payments to an app, fearing mistakes or fraud. Education and service quality matter as much as technology.
Acceptance next: a payment method only takes hold if merchants accept it. Equipping small shops, simplifying checkout and making fees clear are key.
Interoperability last: to become a reflex, mobile payment must work across banks, apps and networks without the user having to think about it.

Questions to follow in 2027
How do we bring mobile payment to small shops in every wilaya? How can security be strengthened without complicating the experience? What room is there for startups alongside banks and Algérie Poste? And how can we measure what these new habits change for households and businesses?
These questions are on the agenda of the Algeria Mobile Summit, Wednesday 27 to Saturday 30 January 2027, 10:00 to 18:00, at the Palais des Expositions SAFEX, Hall A. Entry is free with registration: book your badge and see up close how Algeria pays, today and tomorrow.
